Fly casting is different from other types of casting. The weight of the line carries the hook, and the angler controls the movement of the fly on the water to attract a fish. When learning to fly cast, imagine yourself “throwing the line” onto the water. The quick acceleration and sudden stop of the cast motion might feel a lot like flicking the paint from a paintbrush or throwing a ball. Beginning anglers will likely learn the overhead cast and the roll cast. Both casts have similar strokes, but differ in their timing and line paths across the water.
