Explore a Riparian Area

Take a hike along a stream, or explore a riparian area. A lot of really interesting plants and animals live right near streams. What birds do you hear? What insects do you see? What does the ground feel like under your feet? Are there things do you see that don’t make sense? What do you think might be going on? When you go exploring, be sure to wear old clothes that you can get dirty, and don’t be afraid to get muddy! Also, take a bag along with you, so that you can pick up any litter you find and dispose of it properly, at home. (photo courtesy of USDA NRCS)

Turn Over Rocks

Just turning over a rock in or near the stream can reveal a whole new world. Many insects such as caddisfly and dragonfly larvae, as well as other animals such as crayfish and minnows, like to live under rocks. Turn over a bunch! Do you find the same things under every rock? When you’re done looking, be sure to put the rocks back where you found them.

Tell us your exploration stories, and we’ll put them on this page to share with other kids!
