1. Water Conservation
The water that we use in our homes is the same water that trout use. Even if we use water from a well, that water is still connected to the streams around our homes. So, the less water we use, the more there is for the trout!
2. Rain Garden, Native Plants, Friendly Grass-maintenance
You live in a watershed. So, remember that the rain and snow that falls on your home and yard eventually flows into a stream or the ocean. You and your family can do a lot to make sure that the water around your home stays as clean as possible. First of all, pick up litter. During a rainstorm, water can carry litter to a stream where it might hurt trout. Then, plant rain gardens! The rain that falls on your roof has to go somewhere. Once you figure out where it all drains, ask if you can plant native flowers and shrubs in that area. They will soak up all the extra water during a rainstorm. If you have a grassy yard, ask the adults in your family to use as few lawn chemicals (fertilizers and pesticides) as possible. If you’re lucky enough to have a stream on your property, ask the adults in your family to keep a healthy riparian area next to the stream. Even if you live in a city and don’t have a yard, you can still pick up litter and make sure that you don’t put anything on the ground (chemicals or litter) that could wash into the storm drains.
